The choice of stripper will always
depend upon what you are trying to remove, and what the substrate is susceptible
to damage by. I agree with Brian that DCM gets an unnecessarily bad press,
but legislation is legislation. Questionable science seems to hit this
industry as much as any other.
However, DMSO
(Dimethylsulfoxide) has been proffered as a more environmentally acceptable and
safe to use solvent, with similar solvency properties to DCM, but has far fewer
legal H&S requirements. That is if you can get over the name of the
corporation that supplies it ;-) ...
