Steve, I had a look at the fractured chips in your photos. The fracture surfaces have the typical appearance of a brittle fracture (concoidal, if I remember correctly) that suggests that something hard has hit the edges. If it had been ESD damage I would have expected the surfaces to show melted surfaces. My two groats worth is that the silicon was damaged by handling damage during die attach.
