Steve, We had a copy of orcad (not used) and when we looked at a pattern, it had the same rectangle every 10 pads. Our guess was it would make counting pins easier. It looks exaggerated on your older version of gc prevue. We have never had a design that used this software, so we have never had to deal with the problem. I would guess the designer could edit his package library and eliminate this problem.
