Phil: I agree with everything Bob has said. The best practice is to use print notes or details to specify what you want without ambiguity. In other words, detail outlines and non-circular routed openings as you would on a mechanical part. As a board fabricator, I think your fab shop missed the call out and used a standard cutter to profile the part. We typically stock bits in the following sizes to handle issues like this. 0.025", 0.031", 0.036", 0.040", 0.047", 0.050", 0.055", 0.062", 0.093", 0.100", and 0.125". To clarify what you want, I would create a detail drawing of the cut out and indicate the radius location with a 0.0215" Maximum call out. If you need to put the proverbial square peg in a round hole, the corners of the cutout can be over routed in one direction removing the radius from the component location. Robert B. We have a small circuit board that is supposed to have a rectangular cutout to accept ferrite cores. My board house used an 0.093 diameter cutter with the argument that it cut through the "corner holes" specified on the print. He says that I need to add a radius spec to my board drawing. My board designer (and I) have reviewed this board and think that it is clear what should be done [we need the 0.043 (0.0215 radius corners) holes for clearance]. I have asked Steve Gregory to post a JPEG file of the board. It can be found at; http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com/ and click on "Routing", or http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com/files/Routing.jpg How do you think this should be specified/machined? Thanks in advance. Thanks Steve for posting the file.
