Phil, call me old fashioned, but I prefer Weller as a first choice and Metcal as a last choice. I have always had good results with Weller. Weller has a variety of types and styles to chose from and the ones I used were pretty much low maintenance.

I'm not happy with the reliability of our current soldering irons. I have about 20 hand pieces in my office that are dead for one reason or another. We do only through hole circuit boards and electromechanical assemblies. Our present models are ESD safe. The irons are typically on all shift (one shift) long and many are cranked up to max temp (850°F).
Without getting into a long sales presentation, what is one of the better soldering irons out there? I could chose by price or name recognition, but I'd rather buy something that is really good, easy to service when broken and is easy to get parts. Are these requests mutually exclusive?
