Mostly we would quote paragraph and subsections to those pesky source inspectors trying to prove we were compliant. The standing joke was "If you had enough paper you could ship product whether it worked or not.". All in All I think ISO is a kinder and gentler standard with much more emphasis on building quality in rather trying to inspect/screen it in.
