"You can´t inspect quality into a job" but you can get something out for future jobs. If something is always at the limit (and the limit is always the "knackpunkt" that makes life so uncomfortable and triggers so much ugly disputes wether to rework or not) it should be noticed and taken for process improvement. Inpectors do have or get certain prejudices depending on their knowledge and the first impression what might lead to trouble. With the right insight of both parties involved it should lead to better quality in the future. We often let things at the limit pass but talk to the other party about these limits and that the way the things are at present are quite dangerous. For example bareboards, the overetching is usually at the limit what makes incoming inspection so frustrating. With some rejects (and costs for the supplier) the experience is that it improves and the deviations are measured from the nominal value and not the upper limit anymore. This is certainly true, but manual inspections also 'catch' a lot of deviations of workmanship standards (or other things that the inspector for some reason does not like) that are nor really defects and have no real impact on quality or reliability. Now, after repair or rework of these 'defects'--has the quality/reliability improved or declined?
