Marc, We can't, of course, see your sketch, but because you're having the supplier specially form the legs, I imagine you've formed them into a gull wing type configuration and kept the caps as surface mount (albeit a large one). For bonding, I recommend Eccobond 45. In my former life, we used it widely on vulnerable components in the Eurofighter radar. It's an epoxy, rather than an RTV, as I'm reluctant to use RTV on boards anyway. Hope this helps a bit. Unfortunately the only capacitor suitable for this is a through hole device. We have therefore asked our supplier to form the legs as follows: We have had instances where the solder on the left hand leg has not been sufficient, the leg has come loose and this has worked like a spring. Also the RTV compound we have also found to be unreliable. Could some-one please advise of the following: 1. Is there a better adhesive to use instead of RTV compound? 2. Is there a quick and easy way for an inspector to check the solder joint without placing undue stress on the capacitor legs or the solder joint? We currently asking inspectors to "gently" try to move the leg while looking at the solder fillet through a microscope to see if there is a fracture. Thanks for your help.
