No help to Haim, but I'ld like to find a reliable method of splicing leader tape onto reels. Our manufacturing is done in very small batches, and attrition at the start of a run can amount to 1100%. We're trying to get our assembly house to remember to leave some empty tape at the beginning of the reel after a run, but they often forget and cut off all empty tape resulting in another dose of attrition next time. Any news of a means of attaching leader tape would be most welcome. Another $B!H (Bproblem $B!I (B we occasionally have is when a customer orders a non standard quantity in Tape & Reel, say 200 parts instead of the standard 500 parts per reel. Currently, to supply this 200 piece Reel, we will either cut 200 pieces off a full 500 piece Reel, or take remnants of previously cut reels and Re-Tape the 200 pieces on new Carrier Tape. When feasible, we will give the customer a usable Leader and Trailer for their feeders. To avoid the Carrier Tape wastage and Re-Taping, we would like to be able to splice Carrier and Cover Tape as needed. Some companies make splicing tools intended for use by the chip shooter operators, to reduce the machine idle time due to Reel changes. I have the EIA-481 standards, but they do not specifically mention splicing. Do other component suppliers have this problem, how are you handling it. How do the people on the assembly side see this, would it be acceptable to get a Reel with splices? Does someone out there make a generally acceptable splicing tool, that can give us a reliable splice on Tapes with widths up to 32 mm?
