Julien, As a contract manufacturer, we use the IPC J-STD-001 Training for our soldering personnel as well as the IPC-A-610 Training. In rework, we use the standard for 7721/7711, but do not have anyone certified under IPC. The reason for this choice: We do not do very much 'rework' - sometimes a jumper or fixing the edge of a damaged PCB. However, we do hand soldering as a normal part of our manufacturing - this is where the J-STD-001 training is valuable. And - to make sure it is all correct when done, our people also get IPC-A-610 training. I am the registered instructor on site for both IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 and we have found it cost effective to work this way. We have 40 people on the manufacturing floor - 10 are used for hand soldering and we made it a rule, they must pass J-STD-001 for soldering. We also have approximately 25 people that have the IPC-610 training. We also have offered the training to some of our customers as part of our Engineering Services. I looked at the 7721/7711, but could not justify the costs involved at this time. Hope this help you, Tom Parkinson Quality System Manager WinTronics, Inc.
