A sketch of our informal method for such an evaluation is: We made a board with 10 pads in two rows. The pads are 0.5" square, fairly close together, coated with a substantial mound of solder, and no mask. In evalating the recovery of an iron, we analyze the speed run time to takes several operators to melt the solder on the pads.
