Harvey Miller has suggested that the exemption in the proposed European RoHS directive for "servers, network, communications equipment, etc." is a breakthrough -that politics didn't permit "a complete reversal of lead-free at this stage". I see it differently. I see the exemption as nothing more than a tactic by ideologues to further their agenda - that politics didn't permit a complete ban at this stage. As I have tried to warn in this forum, the environmental zealots won't stop. Once they have achieved one goal, they will simply start after the next one, which will be more restrictions on other people's freedoms. It is more than just a "lead-free movement". I am glad that Harvey knows intelligent environmentalists who have been convinced that the proposed material bans are irrational. I also know that there are a lot of other environmentalists who need something to keep them busy, to keep the public scared, to keep the money flowing into their organizations, to maintain their power and prestige. The best way that I can think of to counter their efforts is to encourage people to look beyond arguing the details of their proposals on their merits and examine their real agenda. They are not altruists - they are deceivers. They really don't care whether what they are going after is irrational or not - only what they can get enough other people to believe. I wish that there were more intelligent environmentalists who could see and acknowledge that.
