I was involved in the "first" flying probe development in about 1983, or so.
Once working, the idea was to use the thing for bare board testing. It
worked though somewhat slowly compared with clamshells and beds of nails
stuff.

Story still true today. However, things always improve, or not, and the fact
no fixtures are required makes these testers worth looking into. Not a test
engineer but having to work with those strange types showed me how well they
work for ICT.

To many makers to mention. I guess one of the first commercial successes was
Probot.
