Ken, We use some threaded swage in standoffs on our boards. Given the "roll form" die set we see no splitting or cracking. However, when someone inserts these standoffs without the proper dies the barrel always splits and looks really nasty. Once roll formed they are usually soldered into the board. I have found that even with the serrated standoffs you can't apply much torque to the screw. Hence these are usually only used for mounting the boards or for 2-56 or 4-40 screws which don't get much torque. For applications of terminating wires on circuit boards we use solder screw terminals by Zierick. Specifically part numbers 731 and 928-no-stake. Mfg info; Zierick Radio Circle, Mt. I'm interested in both roll swaged and flared flange both soldered and non-soldered. Using the guidelines of J-STD-001, do the same rules for splits and cracks apply to standoffs as do for bifurcated and turret terminals? In discussions with numerous standoff manufacturers they tell me that these parts WILL split but do not affect form, fit or function. J-STD-001 seems to be concerned with entrapment of processing fluids and does not address standoffs. How do others handle these type of components especially regarding splits and cracks that extend into the shank?
