Hijack! These questions come from recent experience. I'll make this easy, a 50/50 chance, true or false...hope this will stimulate some interesting dialog. I hope that those of you that deal with these issues may sympathize with me... 1. If surface mount devices are used in a design, a solder paste layer should be included in the gerber files. A: True B: False 2. If surface mount devices are use in an assembly, there should be fiducials incorporated somewhere in the solder paste layer. A: True B: False 3. When surface mount devices are used in an assembly, one should consult the manufacturer of the device for a recommended footprint. A: True B: False 4. If a PTH board design has heavy internal metal layers, don't worry about it, or worry about effective thermal reliefs, the people on the production floor will figure out how to solder it. A. True B. False 5. Always use dry-film masks when you want via's tented...even if there is fine pitch SMT on the board. A. True B. False 6. Don't ever worry about clearances for tooling when laying out a SMT assembly that has swaged test points in the assembly. A. True B. False 7. Don't worry whether or not if a original PTH board layout was done for 1/4 watt axial resistors, but things changed to use 1/2 watt axial resistors...no big deal, it's okay. A. True B. False 8. Always spec out HASL for the final finish on a PCB...after all, nothing solders to solder, like solder. A. True B. False 9. Always use polyimide laminates for high-rel assemblies, because that's the way it's always been done. A. True B. False 10. Always spec out using RMA fluxes on the drawing, or spec out assembling to MIL-2000 specs when assembling high-rel assemblies, because that's the way it's always been done. A. True B. False -Steve Gregory- << I am creating a multiple choice test for PCB Designers (similar to the IPC Designer Certification test, but available to all) If you can think of a question that EVERY designer should know OR If you are a vendor and have a question you WISH everyone knew OR If you have a question that only the BEST designers would know OR If you can stump all us with something only YOU know... If you want to be immortalized by having YOUR question included (with one correct answer and four "plausible sounding" wrong answers) BRING IT ON! (I bet you can't come up with anything I can't answer! MwaHaHa!) If you don't want to clutter the email listserver, please forward it to mailto:[log in to unmask] Jack p.s. the test will be available at brainbench.com if you want to see it p.p.s Please do NOT copy anything directly from the IPC test.
