Morning Bev, Here are my 2cents worth (no change due back, please!) 1)We use a 'kinked' lead on the device which is designed to 'snap' into the board and thus hold the component in place for handling and soldering. 2)The purpose for us is to 'stand-off' the component from the thru-hole so that the meniscus formed on the lead of the component does not get into the thru-hole and thereby does not become a hindrance to any soldering taking place in the hole. This would be more of an issue with single sided boards than with double sided plated thru. Of course is it does get into the hole, then an inspector has to question a solder joint they cannot see! An additional purpose is to 'hold' the component in the upright position so it does not interfere with insertions for other components, automatically or manually. 3)As for inspection for the standoff forming and placement, we use the process to let us know if there is a problem. As long as the auto insertion equipment does not 'hiccup' at the components and the insertions are performed 'normally' then we like the components. After wave the soldering process is looked at including the soldering of all components. As long as the components are sitting up 'off' the board and a good joint is visible, great. Hope this helps. Have a great Friday! (Sure hope it is better than mine is going!)
