We build high voltage power supplies and they don't lend themselves to SMT. The boards have the standard LPI solder mask, but we need to mask some component holes for components that are installed after wave solder. Currently we apply ChemaskŪ Peelable solder mask by hand from an 8 fluid ounce bottle. I know there are ways of applying a solder mask using a silkscreen. What equipment is needed? What mask material should I use? What support equipment do I need? Did I leave anything out? Thanks in advance for your input. How many places or holes do you have to mask? The reason that I ask is because if it's not too many per board, you may want to consider using tapered plugs to do that. There's a company called Kinnarney Rubber Company that makes plugs like that, and the material they use can stand the heat of wave solder. They also make boots to go over gold fingers to protect them from wave. Go to: http://www.kinnarney.com/ and you'll see their products. If you use plugs, sure they'll take some time to install, but you won't have to wait for them to cure like liquid masks. You'll still have to manually remove them after wave, but you do that now with latex mask. Lastly, the plugs will be reusable, don't have to keep buying liquid mask. -Steve Gregory- ############################################################## TechNet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8c ############################################################## To subscribe/unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the body: To subscribe: SUBSCRIBE TECHNET <your full name> To unsubscribe: SIGNOFF TECHNET ############################################################## Please visit IPC web site (http://www.ipc.org/html/forum.htm) for additional information.
