The picture I have of ESD damage, at least for MOS-style semiconductors, is that some charge gets transferred to a MOSFET gate. CMOS, with twice as many gates as NMOS, is half as susceptible. The geometries are so small, with associated tiny capacitance, that even minute amounts of charge on the gate can produce a voltage exceeding the breakdown strength of the ultrathin oxide. Thanks to all who have commented on my original question. Are you telling everyone that you have never experienced being shocked by ESD? If you have not, then you are a among the minority. If you have, then there's your study. Trust me ESD does exist, and if you don't have preventive practices in place, then it will cost you money if you are building with ESD sensitive components. My company is experiencing the same thing and Engineers always think they know better. I need to get some factual data and proof showing that ESD exists and costs us money. Issue disciplinary action if they continue to disregard your ESD plan!!! Can your company afford to take the losses from ESD damaged product? Some do not snap them closed in front, and just let the coats hang or float. I've told the people in my department to snap the coats closed, at least 2 of the 5 or 6 snaps. Am I doing the right thing? What's been your experience? Thanks...Lou Hart Also, the floors are coated with static dissipative wax or, in some places, are static dissipative tile. And the people are good about wearing wrist and heel straps. ############################################################## TechNet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8c ############################################################## To subscribe/unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the body: To subscribe: SUBSCRIBE TECHNET <your full name> To unsubscribe: SIGNOFF TECHNET ############################################################## Please visit IPC web site (http://www.ipc.org/html/forum.htm) for additional information.
