As Denny Fritz said, heavy bonding oxide layers are usually measured by weight loss, at least partly because they are non-uniform, and probably exceed the capacity of Auger. Are you attempting to merely measure, or do you want to remove? If you truly want to remove oxide, you may want to consider an acid chemical clean, with built in anti-tarnish (anti-oxide formation) components. This will clean much faster, and will assist in maintaining an oxide free surface.
