Many of us have been persuingthe same questions for many years--a sound SJ is
a basic assumption, even though, of course, bad SJs (in particular improperly
wetted ones) have a major impact on infant mortality. If you have not done
so, you might want to take a look at IPC-D-279 and IPC-SM-785, as well as the
literature.
