Sam,
A two step drilling reduces drill wander. It is also called 'Pilot Hole' or
'Peck' drilling meyhod where you have just a peck by a smaller drill then
followed by the required drill size. The idea is to create a punch mark for
drill to start. In peck drill you may use the same drill, but drill the hole
with increasing feed. First step is just a peck on the surface to be
drilled, back and then advance again. It will help reduce drill wander.
