Graham, My condolences! What about dunking them in some solder stripping chemistry? If it's just a flash coat of HASL, it shouldn't damage the substrate too much. Although, if you are looking for SIR panels, you may want to limit the types of chemistry you put them into. Possibly a light brush/ pumice scrub?
