Harris' suppression division is now Intersil. Preforming MOV leads will cause failures if the device is subject to vibrational tests like those required by UL for consumer devices. The preform weakens the lead and it eventually fails due to the vibration. However this is only what I have found in the past and only on huge devices, not those tiny ones that are no bigger that a dime. I am talking strictly about those 150V 80 Joule and above type of device. Supplier fairy tale time. We have several volume MOV parts where we've created a "snap in" preform to eliminate the "epoxy dip in PTH" syndrome. The vendor in question even developed special tools to create this preform, at no charge. Works great, and we eliminated having to thread a standoff insulator. The preform has a crimp above and below the board surface to stand it off,and hold the part in place. Harris has preforms still in their catalog which may work for your application. I cant remember who Harris MOV stuff was spun off to...was it Littelfuse? Hope this helps John ############################################################## TechNet Mail List provided as a free service by IPC using LISTSERV 1.8c ############################################################## To subscribe/unsubscribe, send a message to [log in to unmask] with following text in the body: To subscribe: SUBSCRIBE TECHNET <your full name> To unsubscribe: SIGNOFF TECHNET ############################################################## Please visit IPC web site (http://www.ipc.org/html/forum.htm) for additional information.
