The foreword of the IPC-A-610 mentions required maginification levels. For fine-pitch you need to go to 30 times maginfication for "referee" inspection. Stereo microscopes with 4 to 40 times magnification work fine for most applications.
I think that the Mantis is excellent for most chip components. If you let inspectors zoom in too much, they will always find something that they don't trust.

Hi technet wizzes!
We're re-establishing our QC dept and I would
need to know what to look for in the solder
inspection departement. What kind of microscope
should I look for? According to the table in
IPC-A-610, I would need 10X mag. equipement, Is that
enough? Most of our board are surface mount, be we
do have some through hole board done.
We have a 6X from Vision Engineering (Mantis) and
it is not sufficient (from my point of view) to inspect
certain soldered smd chip.
Any suggestions???
