That brings up another point:  What's the OSHA regulations on manually
coating the boards.  If regulations prevent you from exposing your workers
to the process, then the machine is the only way to go and you have no
choice.  Payback is important, but the human exposure to those chemicals or
process my preclude you using the manual methods.
