JF, you'd be surprised how advanced most of the basics are.
I'd wish Raine elaborated bit further on the securing methods ,
because he knows it's bit more "complex".
The point is to immobilize the component relative to joints and board.
Therefore a blob of flexible silicon may fill the gap and "look" like a fix
;
when in effect it may be acting as vibro magnifier pending frequency
conditions .

Epoxy (fill and glue)with clamp (a tie > prior to solder) is optimal .
Surface bonding preparations are obviously in place ,
otherwise you'd finish with just a filler,
good enough mostly, as the joint clamps without spare room to move.
Using the joints as a tie itself is a design issue , pending size.
environment, etc.
On SSide copper P/S's it's a dubious practice, however cheap .

Why am I on about is we've had just recently big caps breaking off (one
sided copper) P/S's.
Our QC mgr. came with a "solution" of resolder and blobing some RTV around .
I just shook my head and walked to the sunset .
Forgot to add: he's a chemical eng.; to top it)

Subject: [TN] Tantalum capacitors

Hi Techneters!

Maybe the next question as an obvious answer but I need to know
(You see they just gave me QC inspector job here with nothing else
than an IPC-A-610 Class "A" instructor course to go with. No other
means of training, well someone helps but it's not is job.
That's why my questions may sometimes seem a little basic... sorry!).

Do the big tantalum capacitors need to be secured on the boards? I suppose
yes but some people who claim having years of experience say that
no (Hum!). Wont the vibrations give a hard time to that kind of capacitors?

BTW, anyone know a gook way to get information on QC.
