Ron,

There is never any trouble getting components is there? Heck I have a ton
of surplus A and B size tantalums (just kidding...in the middle of designing
these suckers out of products). 1206, 1210, 2010, and 2512 will not go away
any more than through hole parts have gone away, or will go away. The
reason is power handling capability, and if you need 1/4w power rating, you
need a 1206, unless you want to use 2 0805's and put them in parallel. 1206
pricing is 2.20 /k while 0805 is 1.50 /k roughly. 2 0805s vs. a 1206 will
have a slight adder, and if you only have to do it one or two places, maybe
it makes sense. It all depends on what your customer will allow. 2 0805's
is equal to two parts possibly failing versus 1 1206 in the FMEA report so
it all depends. Also, as hard as you might try, you can't run traces under
0402's!

Subject: [TN] Subj: [TN] Obsolescence Risk

Good Morning TechNet!
I am looking for some opinions from you folks, who, like me, must keep up on
technology now and in the future. Many are already using some of the newer
technologies now in order to "get small".

What are your prognostications concerning the future of 1206 and 0805
components versus that of the 0603, 0402, & I guess I will include 0201s?
Do you think the cost chart lines for the two groups will cross each other
in the near future? By that comment I am referring to the cost of 1206s and
0805s going up because of obsolescence/supply versus the cost of the second
group starting to drop due to a new demand for higher quantities?

Many are looking for smaller, lighter, faster, and less cost, yet with
greater power and capability. Let's put a time frame of say 2000-2004.
This is a lot for a Monday morning so watch for overloads. I had to hit the
reset button a couple times already.

If you want to throw some bonus info into the fracas like future of QFPs,
SOT's, and the like versus micro-BGAs, etc., just go right ahead.

This will have an affect and effect on designs for upcoming products and in
some cases could affect the cost of existing designs. Some customers may
not want to change size, shape, and functionality of their products,
however, the OEM/Contractors, may have to make changes due to component
availability. You all see where I am trying to go with this/these issues?
