NEC Corp. has succeeded in mounting microchips on a PC mother board with
unleaded solder, the first firm in the world to do so, company sources
said Wednesday. The communications equipment and computer maker will use
the technology on notebook PCs from this autumn and plans by the end of
March 2002 to stop using lead to solder chips on mother boards for all
notebook computers produced in Japan.

The new method was developed in anticipation of the European Commission's
intention to regulate lead use in electric appliances, the sources said.
The new process of soldering, which is carried out at the same temperature
as the old one, replaces the lead solder with zinc. Nonlead solder has,
until now, been used for mounting electronic parts that are highly heat-
resistant. But, such solder was not previously used for mounting key
parts on a mother board because the components are too sensitive to heat,
the sources added.
