     I have just finished talking with the soldering experts inside Raytheon
and
it appears there is not yet a consensus on a good replacement for Sn63 /
Pb37.
Unless my contacts are mistaken, NEMI has not yet produced a replacement
recommendation.  Reliability studies are on-going.  The NCMS did produce a
report a couple years back, but no clear winner, i.e. good replacement(s)
for
Sn63 / Pb37, has yet been found.  At the current activity rate, it appears
unlikely one or more will be found and fully tested before the Japanese laws
kick in in 2001.

     However now that I am finally tied into the NEMI and NCMS teams at my
company I won't be able to say what the replacements are, once the studies
are
complete.  I thought you all might like a partial update.
