Hi Steve,

You could never ruffle my feathers!! I enjoy your comments. Anyway, I
asked this same question back in July(Mixing solder bars from different
manufacturer's,) I received mixed thoughts, but I talked with others in the
business outside the forum and based on the response, I decided to mix and I
had no troubles. I copied the responses I received and pasted below.

Good Luck!!
Jim

Setting aside any quality issues related to traceablity of supplier and so
on.
Solder manufacturers generally base their product claims on the purity of
their material, and the merits of the process they use to attain this high
purity.
So if both suppliers are responsible quality companies supplying electronic
grade material and their product claims are true, then all you have from
either supplier is pure tin and pure lead perfectly alloyed together in
perfect harmony.....
On this basis the solders must be identical and can be mixed in any
proportion.

[I thought this was better value than just saying "technically yes"]

Jim,
Ah there's the rub, in your last phrase - "if any quality issues could
arise". If it were to happen, for whatever reason, each solder bar
manufacturer could then point at the other. Unless you are talking a lot of
solder I would recycle it or use it in a small static solder pot, not in one
of your wave solder machines.

Hi Jim,

As far as I know, some bar solder manufacturers make a "high-purity" solder
bar as well as a "normal" bar. If you are running the "normal" bars, mixing
in a high purity bar probably wouldn't hurt. On the other hand, if you are
running "high purity" bars, and you add normal bars, you might be
contaminating your bath.

Jim,

I did this mix in the past and DIDN'T note any difference in the
solder joint quality.

Subject: [TN] Bar Solder...

Hi ya'll!!

I'm gonna word this email very carefully, so I don't ruffle anybody's
feathers...
We're fixing to get a newer (used) wave solder machine to replace the tired
ol' Hollis we have now. The newer one is a Treiber with a 20" wide conveyer.
The guy we're getting it from asked me if I had plenty of bar solder on
hand,
because the pot holds 2200 lbs.!!! Holy-moly! Reminds me of Earl asking
about
how to empty a SEHO pot when the pot heaters went "kaput" on one of those
beasts they hold a ton of solder too...(by the way Earl, HOW did you do
that?)

But my question is; I'm gonna have to buy probably close to 1500 lbs or more
to charge the pot! Is there a problem mixing brands even though it's all
supposed to be 63/37? I have my favorite brand that I use, but it's a little
on the pricey side, and not too painful to management when I only get 250
lbs. every once inna while...

But I know someone up front is gonna crap their pants when I tell them we'll
need to buy over $4,000 of solder to fill the pot up! I know darn good and
well somebody is gonna ask if I can find some cheaper solder. I'd rather
stick with what I'm using now, it's the brand I've always used and I've
never
had any problems at all. But what if I mix brands? Tell me that I shouldn't
do that and give me some ammo...
