Hi Al -

The corporation I recently retired from requires protective lenses on all
personnel entering any form of assembly area.  This policy was instituted
about 25 years ago as a result of eye injuries originating from lead
clippings and similar.  To the best of my knowledge, this has been
implemented throughout the corporation (worldwide).
