Unusual question, Elaine,
I like to simplify everything (I'm lazy) so my opinion (worth 2 cents?) is:

The quality engineer's work may be to:
a) to make the stockholders positive, that's the main reason
b) to be a link between the customer and your company (two-direction speaking), so the customer has a chance to get an eye on the product in time to see if he will like it or not, and your company has the possiblity to check costs, tools, delivery time and all necessities for meeting the customers requirements).
c) to be a link even against the society (environment, pollution, recycling etc)

I have waded through a number of books, and listened to sophisticated speakers in the matter, in order to understand myself, and did not become much wiser, not until I read the book 'MPS in the factory' . Therefore, a) to c) could possibly be reduced even more to:

reducing of bottlenecks.

But if that was true, many books in the matter would not be sold, so my amateur opinion will soon be massacred, where can I hide.....?

Good Luck
Ingemar

PS. The wine taster...is he a quality engineer?

Does anyone employ quality engineering in their shops? Could you please define what their main function is in electronics manufacturing.
