I'm on your line too, Hans,
SPC is certainly excellent in Toyota's mastodont factories (or Chrysler's or whatever..) where you repeat well known factors like weight, joining force, weld time, air pressure, distance, 3D position, linear motor speed, rubber hardness etc. It's like a gigantic Lego. For many electronic manufacturing processes, we don't have so many 'digital' data to put in. You mention paste printing and soldering, and I think of paste printing and thickfilm firing. There are so many non-linear or hard-to-define issues that can not be put in the SPC map. How do you mathematically define the cleanliness of a stencile's backside or levelling of a paste? Instead, there is an operators knowhow and skill that decides the result. If s(he)is not experienced or even interested, no SPC works in the world will increase the final quality. In some cases, the SPC has been driven more in terms of making a personal success or demonstrate intellectual 'creativity', rather than just find the bottleneck. I do!
!
n't deny SPC, but it seems that people become a little fanatic and forget material and process knowledge, which can not be replaced by any Taguchis. I have even seen examples when the SPC engineers have been working with their matters without speaking with the operators! That makes no sence to me.
Sensmoral: knowhow is superior to SPC. SPC can be much simplified by more knowhow.
