For years we have used type R flux when working with stranded wires. Not
only does the solder wick up under the insulation (into the wire core) so
does the flux. Since type R does not contain activators there is little to
no chance for corrosion. The second key is to reduce the volume of flux
usage to only that which is volitized in the soldering process (ie. use only
minute quantities of flux always, excess is also waistful).

Subject: [TN] Soldering Stranded Wires

Hi,
Is there a documented reference for recommended flux type for soldering
stranded wires?
Currently, we only use RMA or No-clean types. My understanding regarding
water soluble fluxes is that they are highly corrosive and that it's
difficult (if not impossible through a regular cleaning process) to
remove the flux from underneath the insulation. I'm trying to
substantiate this claim. Any help will be appreciated.
