<< Gotcha Steve,

finally I can look smart and disagree with you. The problem is I
 don't know why.

So, we always get the QFPs, SQFPs, FLTs and other tray packed
components with the same orientation in the tray. And they come from
different manufacturers, distributors, brokers. How do we manage to do this?
I don't know. Maybe it's component engineer or purchaser magic, I'll try to
 find out.

Hi ya' loan!

Just to make sure I wasn't sticking my foot in my mouth, I just went out to
our dry-box and went through a few part numbers to check once again. This is
what I found:

(All trays were the standard 136mm X 316mm JEDEC trays)

64-pin QFP from IDT, in a 6 X 15 position tray, pin-1 was in the lower left
corner
144-pin QFP from XILINX, in a 5 X 12 position tray, pin-1 was in the lower
left corner
160-pin QFP from AMCC, in a 3 X 8 position tray, pin-1 was in the upper right
corner
208-pin QFP from ALTERA, in a 3 X 8 position tray, pin-1 was in lower left
corner
532-pin QFP from T.I., in a 2 X 5 position tray, pin-1 was in the upper right
corner

So I had a mix of two pin-1 positions, but there were more lower left pin-1's
than the other. By the way, how I referenced upper right and lower left was
by holding the tray so that the part numbers stamped on the parts were
reading correctly in front of you.
