At this moment, we have the Home Electronics Recycling Law. This was fixed
last year. From April 1st. in 2001, we need to collect and to recycle 4
major products. In this law, no mention has been made on lead-free.
However, we have another law that does not permit us to put any kind of
waste leaching toxic elements into the environment. Combining these
legislations, we need to move to lead-free. As far as I know, there is no
other legislation on lead-free electronics packaging pending in Japan.

You can get the complete sentence of the Home Electronics Recylcing Law on
the web site of the MITI.

But, please remember, this is not only the problem of legislation. Many of
us are worrying about environmental hazard from electronics wastes that I
have presented at the IPC meeting.
