Ken,

Check out compound metallurgical microscopes by Zeis, Olympus, or Nikon
(there are other good ones out there to). IPC says that microsection
inspection needs to be completed at 100x magnification with a 200x used for
referee.

If I where to by a single scope it would be an upright style (rather than
the inverted)and would have room for 4 or 5 lens (5x, 10x, 20x, 50x, 80x)
with 10x eyepieces. Spend the money on good optics! Also be sure to get a
video capture system with it. If I could have two metallurgical style
scopes one of them would definitely be an inverted style (much more handy
for viewing microsections but not as versatile as the upright).

IMHO (in my humble opinion) you also need to buy a good quality "stereo
zoom" microscope capable of about 5 - 40x magnifications. Again spend the
money on good optics. You'll need this for PWBA inspection. The
metallurgicals don't have the "depth of field" and the magnifications are
two high for comfortable assembly inspection.

I won't even guess at the prices since it has been a long time since I have
purchased one.

Subject: [TN] Microscope for PWB and PWBA inspection

Interested in buying a microscope for fab cross-section inspection
application if I can convince my boss that it's not that expensive. I would
like to know the relative price range and kind of magnification I should
have it. Can I use the same one for PWBA inspection?
