I recommend ASM Handbook13 about corrosion for basic understanding why corrosion appears. Understanding corrosion can sometimes lead to other solutions than coatings, which use to have some drawbacks also (expensive, non-repareable boards...)

Contents in ASM 13 e.g. : atmospheric corrosion, galvanic corrosion, stray current corrosion, biological corrosion, molten salt corrosion, hi temperature corrosion, filiform corrosion, crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, dealloying corrosion etc. In the same book there are pages after pages about how to avoid corrosion. This book (1,300 pages) should be in your library also.

I certainly have more direct literature about specific coatings, but why don't you go to duPont, 3M, Grace and the other big coating manufacturers? They use to drown you with professional articles and facts.

By the way, anybody who knows what became of the company 'High Dielectric Insulation Inc.' ? They made the toughest coating I have ever seen. We let them coat a number of Kovar packages ("Hybrids") which were prone to corrosion in marine environment (laser weld seam and I/Os). After coating (only 1mil thick and black) we could let the packages spend weeks (!!) in a salt spray chamber, and absolutely nothing happened with the packages. They had become inert.
Good Luck
