How many of these do you need to fix?
My company manufactures a PCMCIA card with a VQFP100 processor on it. If
there is rework necessary, I use a Pace MBT250 rework station, but in a
pinch I can use a standard soldering station with a mini-wave type
soldering tip. (A mini-wave has a bevelled tip with a concave
"reservoir" that holds a drop of solder. After application of a copious
amount of flux, the mini-wave tip is gently moved across the pins. This
causes a mini solder wave action across the chip.
With this system and a "no-clean" flux, I can solder down a 100 pin
VQFP component by hand in less than 45 seconds. (I have lots of
practice)
Rework is a little more difficult (60 seconds). Watch your tip
temperature (600F max, this is not a woodburning set) and don't flood
the solder. Any magnification will help - 4X is nice.
Remember- In rework, patience is a virtue, everything else leads to
scrap.

Subject: [TN] Reworking 20mil IC
Hi everyone,
We were given some boards from one of our customers, that we
normally would
not do because of the fine pitch IC(20mil). Our printing
process didn't do
bad considering the situation, but it did cause some soldering
problems that
I'm trying to fix. This board is double sided with two 41 pins 20 mil
spacing IC's next to each other. The soldering problems that
I am having is
insufficient solder on some of the pins due to poor printing.
Since there
are parts on each side, does anyone have any recommendations
on how to add
solder to the pins with insufficient solder? How does it get
done on the
fine pitch side of manufacturing? What equipment is needed to
add solder to
the pins?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
Jim
