Steve,
I understand that it is commonplace to go without carbon filters in your DI
system if you have evidence that the city water you use is consistently low
in organics. If you choose to use a carbon filter then you should determine
the change frequency required. Many people use a little light on their ion
exchange cylinders and a meter on the final water quality. This doesn't
apply to carbon filters. So if your vendor sold you a carbon filter every
week or two (along with a couple of ion exchange bottles) then he may very
well have ripped you off. Your vendor knows this and (in my opinion) has an
obligation to tell you this. While he makes a lot of money operating in
this manner he certainly runs the risk of being publicly embarrassed with
the exposure of his tactics.
We should all keep in mind that the best price isn't always the best value.
$200 sounds pretty good for 2.6 cu ft of carbon. On the other hand look
what you would have saved if a very good vendor had come along and showed
you that you only needed to change the carbon cylinder every 3 months. The
problem is that most people will get the education from the best vendor then
buy from the cheapest. It doesn't give him much incentive to stay the best.

Do you really think it's a good idea to be discussing vendor names and

Steve,
When somebody has sold my company something that they didn't really need for
the last 2-years, I want to let people know about it so they don't fall for
the same thing...I think the people that spend good money for things only to
find out later that it was money spent unecessarily appreciate that...
ANYBODY that tries to sell me something and I learn I really don't need to
buy it, I'll let the whole world know about it...it's called fighting back.
There's too many sales people out there that will take advantage of a
persons
lack of knowledge just so they can get their commissions...unfortunately,
you
see that more often than most people would like to see in this industry.
Let me ask, why is price for things such a big secret? Is it because that
knowledge, if widely known, might ruin an opportunity to gouge the
uninformed?
I'm not trying to sell anything, just let people know about a company that
has been selling my employer something for 2-years that was not really
needed...
So yes, I do think it's a good idea in situations like this. I would hope
that other people would do the same should they ever have a similar
experience...
