Mark,
It is unfortunate that your employer feels the way it/they do.  As you
eloquently point out, it is very satisfying to help those around us.  I also
find that it usually means you get something in return, it engenders good
feelings by those in the industry for your company and, let's be frank, it
certainly doesn't hurt your own visibility.  I hope you find the time and
place to speak out.  It sounds like you have some enthusiasm and spark that
we would like to see.

PS Yes, I know this is touchy feely and not technical, but I think it goes
back to the core of the thread that Steve Gregory set off a couple of weeks
ago and it does need to be aired, as it goes to the whole modus operandi
(spelling?) for TechNet.
