I like to have the original message included so that I can see what the original question is.  It also helps me follow the thread of conversation, very often there is more than one separate reply to a single question (instead of a reply to a reply to a reply....to a question.)  As a relatively inexperienced (but learning fast) manufacturing engineer, it helps me to see the question AND answer.
In deference to our beleaguered colleagues, however, I'll make it a point to delete the junk that accumulates at the bottom of the message.

I agree with Ted. The attached message or threads can be helpful in
refreshing the original question, and don't impact message size that much.
To each their own, but I like 'em left alone....
