Jim,

I was out last Friday when you posted this, and you have gotten a lot of
different ideas. I have worked in two different environments for part
numbering, make it look descriptive and make it sequential.

Personally I prefer the sequential method. As someone pointed out, a
descriptive number will eventually get you behind the 8-ball. Basically you
need to define what the part number is there for. I would imagine that a
contract manufacturer would be someplace that would want to use a
descriptive number. In a production environment though, what is the main
purpose for the number? Just to identify a part to purchasing, inspection,
warehousing and production personnel? If so, why make it descriptive? You
may be trying to create a system for use by the many and only understood by
a few. Sounds like a management nightmare, or maybe at least a headache!

We use the sequential method here, 6 digits with dash number capability.
i.e, 1/4W TH 10% = #123456. Now you go look at that print and you find that
it is dashed out from -01 to -99. The dash numbers are the logical step
values used in the industry. Not all dash numbers are entered into the MRP
system, only those of use. 98% of the people who encounter the part number
know the part by the number, not by what it is, or what it does.

Good luck in determining the method that will suit your needs!
