Just to give my twenty pence worth.... (inflation & the rise in the cost
of U.K. living!)

We use an 7 digit numeric part code (but its getting bigger!). XX-XXX-XX
Where for instance all the resistors come under 01-xxx-xx, Capacitors
under 02-xxx-xx etc.

I would suggest that you leave a gap of a few numbers between things
like resistors etc
I.E. You may only stock upto 10k & from 15k at present but who knows if
your going to stock 12k in the future, not having the part number for it
can sure screw things up a bit (it does here!).

As an example of this, only last week we had to stock 2 new 1% resistors
which ended up quite some distance away from the other
1% resistors because someone was shortsighted enough not to leave gaps
between them.

Using numbers that have no correlation to the manufacturers part number
does allow us to change manufacturer & keep the same part number.

We also have some sort of ruling on the numbers also, something about
the last 5 them always adding upto a particular number or something so
that they cannot get confused.
we might have 01-170-14 followed by 01-171-15, but never 01-170-15 in
between them or else it may get easily mistaken at first glance.

Whatever, to echo what others have said, make sure that your
descriptions are describing the item correctly, we have some items that
use the manufacturers code in the
description, masking the true description of the item itself.
