My two cents...
My first company had a 6-digit numeric system for production, assigned in
sequential order. This covered some components, assemblies, sub-assemblies,
and some as-required material (other as-required material i.e. solder was
called out in the process documentation). The drawing titles carried the
information. To find all the 1K resistors, you would enter "Like 1K" in the
title query.
This company had a large military business, so 90% of our electronic and
mechanical component part numbers were the MIL or ANSI spec number. Part
numbers like RNC55H1001FR, M39003/01-2918, JANTX1N914, M38510/10101 and
NAS620C routinely appeared on our parts lists. The rationale was it didn't
matter which supplier provided the part, as long as they were qualified to
the appropriate spec.
If we needed something special (like additional screening), or it was a
custom part or we needed a specific supplier, we would create a 6-digit
source control or selected item drawing.
And then there were tabulated drawings. Our surface mount components were
handled this way. A 6-digit number was pulled for ceramic SMT caps, then the
different tolerances and values were assigned a dash number. In your
example, CRCW0805102JRT1 would be listed as 123456-123 on our assembly
prints.

My current employer uses a system similar to what been posted. It is a
7-digit format of XXXX-XXX. The 4-digit prefix is the type of drawing.
9XXX's for schematics, 3XXX's for bare boards and 54XX's for assemblies. The
3-digit suffix is assigned sequentially. Again, the information is in the
drawing title and you can query on the title on our parts database. The
scheme was fine early on, but now we're running out of numbers. So not all
9XXX drawings are schematics; some are housings or pumps.
