Our part numbering system is similar to a lot that has been said already.
Simply, XXX-XXXX-XX are all numbers with the first three the class, the next
four some unique identifier (usually just the next available number), and the
last two the revision number. From a traceability and control perspective,
the revision number has been very effective, especially for subcomponent or
design changes.

Disadvantage, you still need a cross reference guide and multiple part numbers
of the same component can be created. No controls to stop that, just an
awareness by the designer to check first.

We've also incorporated all this information into a searchable database.
Controlled, of course, but with approved vendors and other information.
