I had the same problem here but my system allowed me only 9 digits to
describe all parts of a computer hardware.Whith this limitations I build one
table with multiple part numbers description according with the type of
component. Bellow are some examples to clarify my answer.

Fisrt digit I had to keep in 3 to describe CKD parts

  Second digit

0 - Cap. chip
1- Resistro chip
2-capacitor PTH
3-resistor PTH
4-semicondictor SMD
5-semiconductor PTH
6-mechanical part
7-others SMD
8-others PTH
9-others

Part numbers for cap chips

30 X YY Z T AA where :

X defines size ( 0- 0402 ; 1-0603 ; 2 - 1206 ; etc )
YY defines value in pf
Z defines multiplication value ( 0 - x1 ; 1 - x10; 2- x100; 3 x1000 etc.. )
T defines isolation voltage ( 0- 16V ; 1- 25V ; 2 - 50V; etc )
AA is a sequential number

Part numbers for semiconductor SMD

34 X AAAAAA where :

X defines type ( 0- transistor ; 1- diode; 2- FET; 3- Varactor; 4-
Integrated circuit; etc ... )
AAAAAA ( comercial code of the componente )

Ex : 74H244 will be 34474H244

As you can see the codes designation changes with the type of
component. Some parts are hard to code since they don't had associated value
( like batery holder; fuse clamps; heatsinks; etc ) Each manufacturer alone
has a good system to code their part very well, but is very hard ( or
impossible ) to link everbody togheter in a easy way to retrieval.
To use your own code is good when your supplier put the label for you, if
you have to put the label with your created part number at your income
inspection there is a change of mistake ( people can put wrong label ... )
that will not be caught by your bar code system ( if you intend to use one )
and this means disaster at assembly line.
To use vendor part number you must be aware of different coding types,
operators must be alert to call supervisor with any doubt. Many important
factors are codified in letters that operators sometimes don't care they
generaly look for numbers, for instance, if the tolerance are given by
letter they can change a 1% resistor by 5% and this will cause problem.

I hope this help
