Jim,

I have to agree with other replies you've gotten in that I think using
manufacturer's part numbers is too cumbersome for the heaviest users. It
also tends to mean that you could end up with several different numbers for
basically the same part. In our case, most times I don't care whose 1K,
0805, 5% resistor I use. I think manufacturer's numbers are best left to an
approved or qualified vendor listing. Obviously, alot of that depends on how
specific you need to be with whose parts you use; it may be different in
your case.

That said, we have been using a very generic system. Basically we use a
5-digit number XNNNN where the X is a very general class, i.e. "1" would be
capacitors, and the NNNN is just a sequential number. All data relating to
package, value, type of part, etc. is put in the description field.

Recently we have been looking at making the system a little more specific,
but haven't formulated anything as of yet. I do have a draft of a system
being developed by one of our customers that I could email you if you like.
It is a first cut at a fairly comprehensive system and may give you some
ideas for your own system. Let me know.

Subject: [TN] Part numbering system

Hi Everyone,

We are in the process of bettering our part numbering system. I was wanting
to know how everyone out there handles their numbering and description
fields. Example: part number CRCW0805102JRT1 would equal - 0805, 1Kohm,
5%, paper tape. I believe the manufacturers number should be used for the
part number, but how do we describe this so that anyone can find this part
if they are needing a 0805, 1K, 5% resistor? Just wanting to see how
everyone does this with any of their parts. Do you use the manufactures
part number or create your own? How do you describe you part for ease of
retrieval? Any response would be greatly appreciated!
