Hi Jim

You really got my attention when you said we are trying to make your process
better.

1. Would advise against using the mfg p/n as your p/n.
Logical storage and retrieval of p/n originating from
different places will be continuous headache.
How will you store resistor CRW0805102JRT1 with
        conn p/n 102393-8 (amp).
(what happens when two mfg have the same p/n)?

2. If you feel you must have a smart numbering system . . .
No matter how many categories you plan for . . .
there are always those that will not fit . . .
My opinion - not worth the time and money, too much maintenance.

I believe if you assign your own p/n you will be better off.

The trick is p/n DESCRIPTIONS (Res 10K 5% 0805)

Sort by p/n description gives all res, conn, cap, etc. etc. etc.

If you can make the p/n descriptions CONSISTENT

YOUR HANDLING COSTS WILL BE LESS ! ! !

Doesn't matter what the p/n is
if all p/n descriptions follow convention
you will find yourself way out in front of the competition.

If you have any competition.

Good Luck

Subject: [TN] Part numbering system

Hi Everyone,

We are in the process of bettering our part numbering system. I was wanting
to know how everyone out there handles their numbering and description
fields. Example: part number CRCW0805102JRT1 would equal - 0805, 1Kohm,
5%, paper tape. I believe the manufacturers number should be used for the
part number, but how do we describe this so that anyone can find this part
if they are needing a 0805, 1K, 5% resistor? Just wanting to see how
everyone does this with any of their parts. Do you use the manufactures
part number or create your own? How do you describe you part for ease of
retrieval? Any response would be greatly appreciated!
