The static measured from ripping off a tape can indeed be large, but somewhere in the
back of my mind something is buzzing around about insulated/isolated bodies so that
the problem is not a problem till the potential on the isolated body -ie your
device - is let go by earthing (US speak = grounding). Or something. Anyway the
answer is to let it discharge slowly maybe by using a local ioniser or perhaps
humidifier. [I think this is the same problem helicopters can have when coming up to
ships, also the Hindenberg.....]
